“It’s a perfect combination,” said Vaughan of their strengths.

The 1970 antitrust suit was filed on behalf of all NBA players by their union representatives, many of whom, including Oscar Robertson, Wes Unseld and Bill Bradley, are now in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Bradley, who played for the New York Knicks, also served as a U.S. senator from New Jersey.
The NBA’s current season, which had been scheduled to start Nov. 1, is suspended while the league and players try to reach a new labor agreement. NBA players on Nov. 14 dissolved their union to file antitrust suits against the league.

A cooperation deal with prosecutors that leaves Kugel free on $3 million bail would earn him leniency at a sentencing tentatively scheduled for May 4. As part of the plea, he agreed to forfeit $3.5 million to the government.
The 66-year-old Kugel told Judge Laura Taylor Swain that he was engaging in fraud in the private investment wing of Madoff's Manhattan-based business in the early 1970s.

Gates was the first witness to testify Monday as Microsoft lawyers presented their case in the trial that's been ongoing in federal court in Salt Lake City for about a month. He is set to resume testimony Tuesday morning.
Utah-based Novell Inc. sued Microsoft in 2004, claiming the Redmond, Wash., company violated U.S. antitrust laws through its arrangements with other software makers when it launched Windows 95. Novell says it was later forced to sell WordPerfect for a $1.2 billion loss. Novell is now a wholly owned subsidiary of The Attachmate Group, the result of a merger that was completed earlier this year.
Gates said Novell just couldn't deliver a Windows 95 compatible WordPerfect program in time for its rollout, and its own Word program was actually better. He said that by 1994, Microsoft's Word writing program was ranked No. 1 in the market above WordPerfect.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of Americans who bought previously occupied homes rose slightly last month but remained at depressed levels. And more deals are being canceled at the last minute, a sign that even those who are looking to buy are worried about the housing market.
Home sales rose 1.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.97 million, the National Association of Realtors said Monday. That's below the 6 million that economists say is consistent with a healthy housing market and slightly ahead of last year's sales -- the worst in 13 years.
The sales are measured when buyers close on the homes.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Hewlett-Packard says its net income plunged in the latest quarter as revenue declined in three of its main business lines.

The results illustrate the challenge HP faces as it charts a new course under new leadership.
HP earned $239 million, or 12 cents per share, versus $2.53 billion, or $1.10 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding items, HP earned $1.17 per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.13.
Revenue rose 3 percent to $32.12 billion. Analysts expected $32.05 billion.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Tyson Foods' net income for the fourth quarter was less than half of what it was last year, the meat producer said Monday, with higher grain costs offsetting better prices and revenue, particularly in its chicken business.
While there were operating income declines of $3 million and $12 million for beef and pork, respectively, that metric tumbled $223 million for chicken, meaning that an operating income of $141 million last year in chicken turned into an operating loss of $82 million in the final quarter of the year.
President and CEO Donnie Smith said he expected chicken supplies to drop next year, giving the company a chance to raise prices and profits.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers Inc. is expanding into a new state for the first time since the days of the housing boom.
The Horsham, Pa.-based company said Monday that it bought privately held Seattle-area builder CamWest Development LLC for an undisclosed amount.
Toll Brothers last made a foray into markets in a new state in 2005, when it entered Minnesota. The builder's last acquisition also was in 2005, when it bought the Orlando, Fla., division of Landstar Homes.
CEO Douglas Yearley Jr. said the CamWest acquisition does not represent the start of a broader expansion by Toll, which operates in 20 states.

Brown also is accused of persuading investors to buy stock through him in Ubiquity Broadcasting Co. of California, telling some that the company was about to "go public" at a substantial profit to investors.
Brown wasn't licensed to sell securities, the state said.

Panera settles suit ? Panera Bread Co. disclosed Monday in a regulatory filing it has agreed to pay $5 million to settle class-action suits filed by former employees who alleged the bakery-cafe chain failed to pay overtime and provide breaks at some company or franchised stores in California.
The settlement requires approval in California Superior Court, but Sunset Hills-based Panera said it has set aside $5 million to pay claims. The company has denied liability and wrongdoing and makes no admission of wrongdoing in connection with the proposed settlement, Panera said.
Suits filed in 2009 and last year in Contra Costa and San Bernardino counties accused the company of violating the California Labor Code, failure to pay overtime, failure to provide meal and rest periods and "termination compensation," plus violations of California's Unfair Competition Law.

Laclede retirement date set ? Laclede Group Inc. says chairman Douglas H. Yaeger will retire from the company's board of directors Jan. 31 — the same date he departs as chief executive.
"Although the board asked me to serve the remaining year of my term, after thoughtful consideration I have decided not to do so," Yaeger said in a statement.
Yaeger, 62, announced at the beginning of the year that he would retire as CEO in February. His successor in that post is Suzanne Sitherwood, an Atlanta utility executive who joined the company as president in September.

Covidien announces purchase ? Dublin-based Covidien PLC, a drug and medical device maker with operations in Hazelwood, said Monday it will buy privately held Barrx Medical Inc. for about $325 million.
Barrx, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., makes a device that uses radio frequencies to treat Barrett's esophagus syndrome, a precancerous condition that is often the result of heartburn and can lead to esophageal cancer.

The technology company reported that net income in the fourth fiscal quarter fell 91 percent, to $200 million, or 12 cents a share, from $2.5 billion, or $1.10 a share, in the year-ago quarter. The quarter includes after-tax costs of closing its webOS software business of $2.1 billion. The company said revenue fell 3 percent, to $32.1 billion, from $33.3 billion in the same quarter a year ago.

Tyson Foods' net income for the fourth quarter was less than half of what it was last year, the meat producer said Monday, with higher grain costs offsetting better prices and revenue, particularly in its chicken business. While there were operating income declines of $3 million and $12 million for beef and pork, respectively, that metric tumbled $223 million for chicken, meaning that an operating income of $141 million last year in chicken turned into an operating loss of $82 million in the final quarter.

Such orders tell a person to stop violating securities laws.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's office said Brown raised $4 million from about 80 investors, including 20 in Missouri. Some, like Brown, were members of the United Pentecostal Church International.
Brown managed two real estate investment companies, both named Invision Investments, in St. Louis and Columbus, Ohio. Carnahan's office alleges that Brown induced people to invest in his real estate businesses and issued notes promising to pay up to 25 percent annual interest.
Brown also is accused of persuading investors to buy stock through him in Ubiquity Broadcasting Co. of California, telling some that the company was about to "go public" at a substantial profit to investors.
Brown wasn't licensed to sell securities, the state said.

Panera settles suit ? Panera Bread Co. disclosed Monday in a regulatory filing it has agreed to pay $5 million to settle class-action suits filed by former employees who alleged the bakery-cafe chain failed to pay overtime and provide breaks at some company or franchised stores in California.
The settlement requires approval in California Superior Court, but Sunset Hills-based Panera said it has set aside $5 million to pay claims. The company has denied liability and wrongdoing and makes no admission of wrongdoing in connection with the proposed settlement, Panera said.
Suits filed in 2009 and last year in Contra Costa and San Bernardino counties accused the company of violating the California Labor Code, failure to pay overtime, failure to provide meal and rest periods and "termination compensation," plus violations of California's Unfair Competition Law.

Laclede retirement date set ? Laclede Group Inc. says chairman Douglas H. Yaeger will retire from the company's board of directors Jan. 31 — the same date he departs as chief executive.
"Although the board asked me to serve the remaining year of my term, after thoughtful consideration I have decided not to do so," Yaeger said in a statement.
Yaeger, 62, announced at the beginning of the year that he would retire as CEO in February. His successor in that post is Suzanne Sitherwood, an Atlanta utility executive who joined the company as president in September.

Covidien announces purchase ? Dublin-based Covidien PLC, a drug and medical device maker with operations in Hazelwood, said Monday it will buy privately held Barrx Medical Inc. for about $325 million.
Barrx, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., makes a device that uses radio frequencies to treat Barrett's esophagus syndrome, a precancerous condition that is often the result of heartburn and can lead to esophageal cancer.

Dozens of customers carrying items for consignment lined up outside the store one recent Monday. They toted armfuls of everything from gently used jeans and casual wear to sleek business attire, upscale children's clothing and designer handbags.
Michelle Schmitt said more than 600 customers bring piles of new and used clothing to the store each month. They process about 16,000 items monthly.
Jan Sack joined the fray on consignment drop-off day. The longtime Brandon resident has patronized Pendy's since it opened at its current spot 21 years ago. Sack showed off a designer handbag she got for a steal while waiting to drop some of her own items off for sale.
"They have the best stuff, purses in particular," Sack said.
Rosie Breitwieser, a Pendy's customer for some 20 years, regularly consigns clothing that her six grandchildren have outgrown. She said she has had bad experiences at other consignment stores, but not at Pendy's.
"They are truly friendly, honest and helpful here, that's why they're so successful," Breitwieser said.
Jody and Jim MacNeil discovered their favorite consignment shop shortly after they moved to Brandon four years ago. The couple figures they make about $100 a month selling their own used or unwanted clothing.
"This store has a following," Jody MacNeil said. "They are consistent and dependable, and you can count on them taking appointments on the last Monday of every month, and (making payouts) on the first week of each month."

"I tell young people not to go for the cheapest suit," says Alperin. "It's not going to last, and in the long run you'll get more out of something a little higher quality." Alperin advises shopping at Club Monaco, J. Crew or Banana Republic, where you can find decent off-the-rack suits for $300 to $400 that won't require too much tailoring.
2. Pick Your Color
"Everyone's first suit should be a solid navy blue." And after navy, Alperin suggests, gray. And then navy pinstripe and then gray pinstripe … and then you can start to experiment. Why all the navy and gray? Because they go with everything. And why navy first? Because it's perceived to be the most professional. We don't know why -- some things just are.
3. Pick Your Style
If you're young, says Alperin, no pleats. "Pleats were designed for a heavier-set person, and they make you look a little frumpy." Flat-front pants give a slimmer, cleaner look -- and who doesn't want that? Cuffs are a personal decision, he adds, but "the rule of thumb is: if no pleats, no cuffs."
As for jackets, either two-button or three-button is fine, but Alperin suggests sticking with the two-button option for your first suit -- mainly because there are more of them out there. "In terms of finding suits at everyday stores that are mid- to good quality, usually it's going to have two buttons."
4. Pick Your Weight
As with color, until you have a closet full of suits and can pick and choose at your whim, you want something that's going to be wearable in as many situations -- and seasons -- as possible. That, according to Alperin, would be a mid-weight 100-percent wool or wool blend.
5. Find Your Fit
"The shoulder and jacket length should be as close to perfect as possible," says Alperin. "Anything else can be fixed." The shoulders should end where your shoulders end; if they're hanging off the end, even a smidge, put the suit back on the rack and find another.
Next, check the length. "You should be able to cup your hand underneath the bottom of the jacket." If you brought dad along, and he's telling you to go to the tips of your fingers, ignore him. That was the rule in his day; the new rule, according to Alperin, is a more modern look. "It makes everyone look taller if your jacket is a little shorter."
Now you can start to relax, because the tailor will handle the rest. If your pants are flat front, make sure they fit in the waist (that's your waist, not your hips) and they'll have a nice straight fit down to the break on your shoe. Have the tailor hem your pants so they bend right as they hit the shoe and don't bunch up. The sleeves should be tailored so that your shirt cuffs show a quarter of an inch. If you bought the right shoulders and jacket length, says Alperin, that's all the tailoring you'll need to do.
6. Complete the Outfit
"A mistake a lot of men make is purchasing a suit without the rest of the outfit," says Alperin. "Without the tie, the socks, the shoes, it's nothing." You'll need a minimum of two shirts: one white, one light blue. If you find a white shirt you like, Alperin suggests buying a few of them. "Your suit will outlive all of your shirts."
There's only one rule for socks: they must be darker than your suit. If your suit is a very dark navy, you can even wear black socks. Ties, of course, can run the gamut, but if you're not ready to experiment, just go solid. "A solid burgundy tie, a dark green tie, navy, gray … they all look good with a navy suit on either a white or light blue shirt."
Finally, says Alperin, invest in a good pair of black shoes -- a typical men's dress shoe like a Cole Haan lace-up -- and a black belt to match. Most important of all: Keep your shoes polished. "It makes the whole outfit, which a lot of men don't realize." fmlht111130

That was the rule in his day; the new rule, according to Alperin, is a more modern look. "It makes everyone look taller if your jacket is a little shorter."
Now you can start to relax, because the tailor will handle the rest. If your pants are flat front, make sure they fit in the waist (that's your waist, not your hips) and they'll have a nice straight fit down to the break on your shoe. Have the tailor hem your pants so they bend right as they hit the shoe and don't bunch up. The sleeves should be tailored so that your shirt cuffs show a quarter of an inch. If you bought the right shoulders and jacket length, says Alperin, that's all the tailoring you'll need to do.
6. Complete the Outfit
"A mistake a lot of men make is purchasing a suit without the rest of the outfit," says Alperin. "Without the tie, the socks, the shoes, it's nothing." You'll need a minimum of two shirts: one white, one light blue. If you find a white shirt you like, Alperin suggests buying a few of them. "Your suit will outlive all of your shirts."
There's only one rule for socks: they must be darker than your suit. If your suit is a very dark navy, you can even wear black socks. Ties, of course, can run the gamut, but if you're not ready to experiment, just go solid. "A solid burgundy tie, a dark green tie, navy, gray … they all look good with a navy suit on either a white or light blue shirt."
Finally, says Alperin, invest in a good pair of black shoes -- a typical men's dress shoe like a Cole Haan lace-up -- and a black belt to match. Most important of all: Keep your shoes polished. "It makes the whole outfit, which a lot of men don't realize." fmlht111130
